Being creative is important for many reasons, some of which explain how being creative can increase your lifespan by decreasing negative emotions as well as reducing stress and anxiety. Think of being creative as an outlet; it’s a way for you to relax and make something cool, learn something new and spend time with yourself. Being creative serves an important role, and there are an infinite number of ways to do it, you just must try them out and see which one you love!
Being creative doesn’t have to be painting or drawing or arts and crafts, simple things like taking photos throughout your day or documenting with video is a form of creativity. Being creative involves some thinking, so having it be a part of your life more consistently could be brainstorming more often, making lists, and having options when it comes to everyday tasks.
I think that in our world of business, work and “grind culture” we take for granted the simplicity of being able to create something, and the best part is that whatever you make doesn’t necessarily need to be perfect. The sky is the limit!
Channel your inner child.
As we grow up, certain things like painting, drawing, being crafty, etc. are seen as “childlike” and almost sometimes frowned upon. One thing about kids though, is they are very creative with their imaginations. Reading about space, mermaids, talking animals, etc. and they have so much fun with those kinds of ideas because they are enjoyable! Far more enjoyable than our boring day-to-day lives. Embracing your inner child to be creative is also letting go of your adult responsibilities and letting the weight of them go for a little while. We all need a break here and there to just be and to just enjoy the ideas that we have in our minds and let them come to life.
Tapping into your inner child is also just a way to let go and enjoy some freedom away from the real world. Kids have so much fun, and we should be able to go back to our roots and enjoy ourselves free from judgement.
Find something you enjoy.
For some, painting might be a great way to express their creative mind and might be really relaxing and fun for them, but for others they may enjoy something else. Some people love to read and write, like myself, others might be musically inclined, or they may enjoy pottery, cooking or baking, fashion, design, etc. There are so many ways to get creative, the most important part is finding an option that you love and that works for you!
Tap into your intuition.
Like channeling your inner child, it’s important to allow yourself to be creative and let those thoughts and ideas flow naturally. When you think of something you want to make, go for it! I always found brainstorming to be a great tool when I needed to generate a lot of ideas, and it allows you to go deeper into those ideas. Go with your gut and see where it takes you, pretty much!
I think that adding a bit of creativity to our daily lives is so important when our days are so mundane and repetitive, so consider doing some research online about ways to get creative and try some of them out! I find it rewarding and freeing to have that time for myself and to just have fun with the things I make.
