Serial killers are getting more and more recognition every day. They are low-key celebrities and have been that way for a few decades already. There are countless books, TV shows, and movies about them. As they are the most popular pieces of the movie industry, we all have heard of them, like The Se7en, The Silence of the Lambs, or The Mindhunter. It does not surprise us to know that these people have a separate fanbase on their own. It has been known that during Ted Bundy’s trials, women tried to look like his ex-girlfriend to trigger an emotion in him. There are plenty of examples showing people’s interest or even love for serial killers. But these are only the facts showing the Hollywood-like side of the issue. Some killers do not look charming, do not have an IQ of over 150, and are not as romantic as you think. One of them is “the Chessboard Killer.”
Who is “the Chessboard Killer,”?
Where does this ridiculous name come from? Later, when the police officers arrested Alexander Pichushkin, they found a chessboard in his house, where the 61-62 boards were filled with signatures. It gave them an idea that maybe it was the number of his victims. Later, he confessed it in front of everyone on TV in Russia. However, the officials never found evidence for that much killing. They only confirmed 51 of the victims, making him the second most notorious serial killer in Russia’s history. Some people argue that he was trying to achieve more killings than Andrei Chikatilo, the Rostov Ripper, and become the most frightening civilian in the country’s history. However, these facts do not make him any less frightening.
Whom and How Did He Kill?
It is another fascinating fact to know that he started killing when he was only 18. At first, he was picking homeless people by offering them free vodka to drink. After making them drunk, he would like to hammer them to death. He would then stick the vodka bottle into their skull to make sure that they are dead. So it was like his signature for the police officers who found the vodka bottles in the victims’ skull. After several findings in Bitsa Park in Moscow, they knew that it was one person’s job. Actually, it became clear later that he would dispose of the bodies in his first killings, but he became overconfident and careless and left the bodies in the park. A frustrating search for any suspect began. Once, they have even captured a person with a hammer in her hand and ready to arrest her to only find out she was just a transgender person trying to protect herself. The tension reached its peak.
In 2006, one of the victim’s son called the police, worried about his mother, who went with someone she used to date to his home but did not come back. Fortunately, she left a note to his son, and in this note, there was Alexander’s address. After checking all the facts, the police took him to jail.
The Final Fate Of The Serial Killer
While his investigation continued, he denied all the killings at first. The police accused him of killing 14 people only. Later, he confessed to the killing of 40 more people by himself. The claim was so shocking that nobody believed him. However, he started talking about the murders and gave all the information to the police. You can find videos of them on YouTube.
After they sentenced him to a lifetime in 2007, in one of Russia’s most famous penal colonies in Siberia, over 80 women have written personal letters to him, and one of them even got an answer from him. There is even a confession of a woman who wants to marry “the Chessboard Killer.”
After all this, you just sit there and wonder, “does the world get any better, or only worse?”
